CHARLOTTENBURG
WATCH OUR VIDEO ABOUT CHARLOTTENBURG
Charlottenburg is the high class living district of West Berlin, next to Tiergarten and Schöneberg. The area is renowned for its magnificent facades and grand staircases, as the entire area developed around Charlottenburg Palace, former residence of kings and emperors. It always was attractive to wealthy, aristocratic families such as the Siemens family and the Bleichröders.
In 1920 Charlottenburg became a magnet for the rich and famous, due to its abundant entertainment offers: theatres, cinemas, cabarets, restaurants, bars - all was available here. After large portions of Charlottenburg were destroyed during the Second World War, it became part of the British Sector, and when tensions between the Western Powers and the Eastern Bloc rose, the area around Zoologischer Garten, Breitscheidplatz and Kurfürstendamm developed into the City West, new heart of West Berlin’s culture. It is defined by the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche, a memorial to the Second World War, the Bikini Berlin, which today houses various shopping facilities, bars, accommodation and office spaces, and the Zoo Palast, one of the major cinemas hosting events for the Berlin International Film Festival for many years.
Today, Charlottenburg and its main boulevard Kurfürstendamm keep their status as the address for the wealthier inhabitants of Berlin. High-end boutiques can be found along the 3,5 km Kudamm, as Berliners like to call Kurfürstendamm. It often is referred to as the Champs-Elysee of Berlin. In recent years, the face of the area was enhanced by new developments built in the centre of Charlottenburg, such as the Waldorf Astoria and the Upper West towers, giving it a modern touch.
Charlottenburg caters all needs for a high-end lifestyle: In the summer, you can find a cozy terrace in one of the cafes and restaurants around Savignyplatz. Have a stroll along Fasanenstrasse to visit its numerous art galleries. After shopping in high end boutiques in the KaDeWe on Kurfürstendamm, you can stop by the Monkey Bar to enjoy the sunset over the rooftops of Berlin. And if you are in for night of jazz, the famous A-Trane Jazz club is the place to be. In Charlottenburg luxury co-exists with an artistic bohemian vibe, while its many quiet byroads offer an unparalleled living standard if chic and elegance are what you desire.
